Nude cruises: the complete guide

There are two kinds of nude cruise, they are not the same holiday, and almost every website you'll find is owned by someone selling one of them.

This one isn't. We don't sell cabins, we don't take bookings, and we're not owned by an operator. What follows is every clothing-optional sailing we can verify, with real dates and real prices, plus the one distinction that determines whether you'll have a wonderful week or a deeply awkward one.

The distinction that matters most

Naturist cruises are about being comfortable without clothes. Non-sexual, explicitly so. The atmosphere is closer to a very relaxed resort than anything else: people read, swim, eat, play trivia, and go to bed. Bare Necessities, the largest operator in this category, puts it plainly in their own FAQ:

"Bare Necessities cruises are strictly non-sexual in nature. If you are seeking a lifestyle or swinger experience, we are not the appropriate cruise for you."

Violations get you disembarked at the next port with no refund. They mean it.

Lifestyle cruises are adults-only, couples-focused, and openly sensual. Theme nights, playrooms, workshops. Clothing is also optional, but that's where the resemblance ends. Bliss, Desire and Temptation all operate in this category.

Same ships. Same ports. Completely different weeks.

Booking the wrong one is the most common mistake people make, and it happens because operator marketing blurs the line and because the phrase "clothing-optional" covers both. If you take nothing else from this page, take that.

"Nude cruise" now means all of it

Strictly, a nude cruise is a naturist charter. In practice the phrase has become umbrella slang for the whole category, naturist through to lifestyle, which is precisely why people end up booking the wrong one.

It's also worth knowing that the lifestyle ships are less exclusive than they look. Agents who sell them estimate as many as half the passengers aren't participating in anything, and there's a term for that cohort now: dirty vanilla. The vocabulary, defined.

Bare Necessities also runs smaller sailing-yacht charters through the year. These are far more intimate, typically a few dozen passengers rather than a few thousand, and they sell out quietly.

Lifestyle

Desire Cruises, also part of Original Group, runs a separate lifestyle programme including Mediterranean and West Indies sailings.

If a full charter is more than you want, three mainstream lines permit topless sunbathing: Virgin Voyages, Celestyal and Costa. Everyone else banned it. Where and what the rules are.

Why you can't just book one on Royal Caribbean's website

Every sailing above is a full-ship charter. An operator buys out an entire vessel from a mainstream cruise line, then sells the cabins itself under its own rules.

That has consequences worth understanding before you start looking:

They run rarely. The Big Nude Boat sails once a year. Miss it and you wait twelve months.

They sell out early. Bare Necessities recommends booking as soon as a sailing is announced, and better cabin categories go first. Early-bird pricing on the 2027 Big Nude Boat runs to $1,000 off a suite, which tells you how much they want your deposit eighteen months out.

The crew stays dressed. Cruise line staff are employees of Norwegian, Celebrity or Royal Caribbean. They work the ship normally.

Cancellation terms are harsh. Bare Necessities states that fares are non-refundable for any reason other than their own gross negligence. Travel insurance isn't an upsell here, it's the only protection you have.

What it actually costs

Nobody in this category publishes a straight answer, so here it is.

For the Big Nude Boat 2027, an 11-night sailing, fares start around $2,000 per person based on double occupancy and run to roughly $33,000 for a three-bedroom villa. On top of the cabin fare you'll pay approximately $202 per person in port taxes and $221 per person in mandatory prepaid gratuities.

Shorter lifestyle sailings work out cheaper per night. Temptation lists from $200 per person per night for its October 2026 Caribbean sailing and $185 for October 2027, with an unlimited open bar included.

The rules, in brief

Naturist sailings run on published rules. They are stricter than most people expect and they exist because the charter arrangement depends on the cruise line staying happy.

The short version on a Bare Necessities sailing:

• Nude at sea and at anchor. Dressed whenever the ship is docked, including on your own balcony.
• Dining rooms require clothing. The buffet does not.
• Always sit on a towel. A fresh one arrives in your cabin daily.
• No photographs of anyone without their explicit consent. There are enforced no-photo zones.
• No lingerie, no fetish wear.
• No sexual activity, no solicitation, no unwanted touching. Ever.
• 21 and over.

Breach any of it and you're off at the next port, no refund, no transport home.

Common questions

Is everyone naked all the time? No. Clothing-optional means optional, every hour. On any given sea day you'll see a mix, and nobody is monitoring your choices. Most first-timers report the self-consciousness fades inside a day.

Who goes on these? Adults 21 and up, skewing older than you'd guess, mostly couples but a meaningful number of solo travellers. Bare Necessities has run these for over 35 years and has a large returning contingent who know each other by name.

Will I know anyone? Statistically, no. The ships carry a couple of thousand people drawn from across North America and Europe. Worth knowing: photography rules mean nothing ends up online.

Can I go alone? Yes, and people do. Be aware that cabin fares are quoted per person at double occupancy, so sailing solo means paying both halves unless you find a cabin-mate. Bare Necessities maintains an informal roommate matching list.

Do I need a passport? For anything not beginning and ending in a US port, yes. Even for round-trip US sailings, operators strongly recommend one valid for at least 60 days past your return.

Is it a sex thing? On naturist sailings, no, and the operators are aggressive about keeping it that way. On lifestyle sailings, that is closer to the point. Which is exactly why the distinction at the top of this page matters.
