The itinerary

Mon 15 Feb — Miami. Depart 4:00pm.

Tue 16 Feb — Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas. Arrive 7:00am, depart 6:00pm. Norwegian's private island, and the first full clothing-optional beach day of the trip. Snorkelling, paddleboarding and zipline excursions available, plus cabanas at Silver Cove for an extra fee.

Wed 17 Feb — Day at sea.

Thu 18 Feb — San Juan, Puerto Rico. Arrive 3:30pm, depart 11:59pm. The late departure is deliberate and unusual, giving you Old San Juan after dark rather than the usual rushed afternoon.

Fri 19 Feb — Road Town, Tortola, BVI. Arrive 8:00am, depart 5:00pm.

Sat 20 Feb — Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis. Arrive 8:00am, depart 5:00pm. Brimstone Hill Fortress is a UNESCO site and worth the trip.

Sun 21 Feb — St John's, Antigua. Arrive 9:00am, depart 6:00pm.

Mon 22 Feb — Day at sea.

Tue 23 Feb — Samaná, Dominican Republic. Arrive 10:00am, depart 6:00pm. Humpback whales migrate into Samaná Bay from January through March, so February sailings often catch them.

Wed 24 Feb — Day at sea.

Thu 25 Feb — Day at sea.

Fri 26 Feb — Miami. Arrive 7:00am.

Six ports, three full days at sea, and one private island. The three sea days are where the ship is at its most relaxed, since they're the days with no dressing requirement at all.

The ship

Norwegian Jewel is a mid-sized Jewel Class vessel, which matters more than it sounds. She's large enough for real variety and small enough that the ship starts feeling familiar by day three.

Dining runs from the Azura and Tsar's Palace main rooms through Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro, Teppanyaki, and the Garden Café buffet. The buffet is clothes-free. The main and specialty dining rooms are not.

Bars and lounges include Maltings Beer & Whiskey Bar, Shakers Martini Bar, and the Spinnaker Lounge, which has panoramic views and is the natural gathering point. Entertainment centres on the Stardust Theater, with the Bliss Ultra Lounge running as a nightclub after dark.

There's a Mandara Spa with thermal suites, a fitness centre, sports court, casino and art gallery.

What it's actually like

Bare Necessities have run clothing-optional charters for over 35 years and it shows in how unremarkable they make it feel. Their own summary:

"There are no strangers on a Bare Necessities vacation, only friends you have yet to meet."

That's marketing copy, but the returning-passenger contingent is real and large, and first-timers consistently report that the self-consciousness they'd been dreading for months lasted about a day.

Passengers skew older than most people expect. All shapes, sizes, ethnicities and orientations are explicitly welcomed, and in practice the crowd looks like a cross-section of ordinary North American adults rather than anything from a brochure.

Theme events run under the Bare-fest banner. Past ones include FantaSEA-FEST, Light Up the Night, Creatures of the Deep, and A Galaxy Far, Far Away. There's also a passenger talent show, which is exactly as charming and chaotic as that suggests.

What it is not

This is not a lifestyle or swinger cruise, and Bare Necessities is blunt about it:

"Bare Necessities cruises are strictly non-sexual in nature. If you are seeking a lifestyle or swinger experience, we are not the appropriate cruise for you."

Sexual activity, solicitation and inappropriate touching all result in disembarkation at the next port with no refund and no transport home. They're an AANR affiliated club and hold to its decorum standards.

Booking, honestly

Book earlier than feels sensible. Early-bird codes on this sailing ran $400 to $1,000 off depending on cabin category, more than a year ahead. Suites got the largest discounts. Better categories sell out first.

The best-price guarantee removes the reason to wait. Bare Necessities automatically applies any later discount you become eligible for, crediting the difference or refunding it if you've paid in full. So booking early costs you nothing in lost opportunity.

Understand the cancellation terms before you pay. Fares are non-refundable for any reason other than the operator's own gross negligence. You can transfer a fully paid cabin to someone else for $100 per person, but otherwise travel insurance is your only protection. Budget for it.

Solo travellers pay double. Fares are per person at double occupancy, so sailing alone means covering the whole cabin. Bare Necessities maintains a roommate matching list and requires both parties to sign an agreement. There's no moving cabins mid-voyage.

Get a passport. Strongly recommended, valid at least 60 days past your return.

Common questions

How many people are on board? Norwegian Jewel carries roughly 2,300 passengers at double occupancy. Recent Big Nude Boat sailings have carried around 2,000.

Is the whole ship nude? Not quite. You must be dressed while docked in port including on your balcony, in the main and specialty dining rooms, and at the Captain's reception. Everywhere else, any hour, your choice.

Is the crew nude? No. They're Norwegian Cruise Line employees working a normal contract.

Can I book through Norwegian directly? No. It's a full-ship charter. Bare Necessities sells every cabin.

What's included? Accommodation, meals, and non-alcoholic basics like coffee, tea, water and juice. Alcohol, soft drinks, bottled water, specialty dining and excursions cost extra. Port taxes and gratuities are billed separately and are mandatory.

When does the 2028 sailing get announced? Bare Necessities typically announces the following year's Big Nude Boat while the current one is still selling. Their newsletter gets it first.
