Vanilla, dirty vanilla, lifestyle, naturist
This corner of travel has its own vocabulary, most of it undefined anywhere useful. Operators use the words assuming you know them. Journalists use them wrong. And the single most common booking mistake in the category comes down to people not knowing which word applies to them.
So, plainly.

Naturist / nudist
Being unclothed, socially, with no sexual dimension. That's the whole thing.
Organised naturism has a governing body in the US, the American Association for Nude Recreation, and affiliated operators hold to its decorum standards. Bare Necessities, who run the Big Nude Boat, are an AANR affiliated club and put it this way:
"We firmly believe that sexuality is not a state of undress, but rather a state of mind."
On a naturist sailing, sexual behaviour gets you removed from the ship at the next port with no refund. It isn't a grey area.
Nudist and naturist are used more or less interchangeably in North America. In Europe "naturist" tends to carry a broader philosophy about nature and simple living, but on a cruise the two mean the same thing.
Vanilla
Borrowed from the wider lifestyle vocabulary. Vanilla means conventional: monogamous, not participating in the lifestyle, not into kink.
It isn't an insult, though it sometimes gets used as one. Travel agencies in this niche openly sell "vanilla vacations" as a category, meaning adults-only trips with no lifestyle element at all.
Dirty vanilla
Also called spicy vanilla. The newest of these terms and the one you'll hear more of.
It describes people who don't identify as lifestyle or swinger, but who occasionally attend lifestyle events, enjoy the atmosphere, and may dabble at the edges. Outwardly conventional, privately a bit more open. Lifestyle-adjacent rather than lifestyle.
The term matters because it names an audience that the industry serves without acknowledging. One lifestyle publication applies it directly to Temptation Cruises, describing them as high-energy trips for open-minded adults where not everyone aboard is in the lifestyle.
Lifestyle / swinger
Consensual non-monogamy, typically couples with other couples. Lifestyle is the industry's preferred term; swinger is the older and blunter one. They mean the same thing and operators use both.
Bliss Cruise answers the question directly in their own FAQ:
"Yes. Bliss Cruise is a lifestyle cruise designed for open-minded couples."
The bit nobody tells you
A large share of the people on a lifestyle cruise are not swingers.
Travel agents who sell these sailings put the figure as high as half. They describe passengers who book for the energy of the environment, the theme nights, the clothing-optional decks and the absence of judgement, with no intention of participating in anything.
That 50% is an industry estimate from agents who book these trips, not a published statistic, and we haven't found survey data to confirm it. Treat it as a well-informed impression rather than a number.
What is documented is the direction. Bliss says so themselves, in the same FAQ where they confirm it's a swinger cruise:
"Bliss Cruise is also a wonderful environment even for those that aren't in the lifestyle but want a fun sexy clothing-optional environment."
Temptation frames its rules the same way — that the au-naturel and top-optional areas exist "to let you experience freedom without pressure. Enjoy at your own pace and allow others to do the same."
So the honest answer to "can we go if we're not swingers" is yes, commonly, and you will not be the only ones. Consent governs everything on these ships, nothing is compulsory, and a polite no is unremarkable.
Whether you'd enjoy it is a separate question, and depends more on how you feel about the atmosphere than on what you intend to do. Ten questions will help you work that out.
Why "nude cruise" means all of it
Strictly, a nude cruise is a naturist charter. In practice the phrase has become umbrella slang for the whole category, from AANR-affiliated naturist sailings through to full-throttle lifestyle ships.
That's why people searching for one thing routinely land on the other, and it's why this site covers all of it rather than pretending the boundary is cleaner than it is.
It's also why the operators' own language is worth reading closely. Temptation distinguishes "au-naturel" areas from "top-optional" areas, which are different things. Bliss offers clothing-optional decks only when the ship is at sea. Bare Necessities is clothing-optional nearly everywhere, nearly always. All three get called nude cruises.
